Happy Earth Day!!

Here at Iracambi every day is Earth Day – whether it’s a student from London marveling at the rainforest, a child from LImeira learning about climate change, our nursery manager lovingly tending the trees in the forest nursery, volunteers sprucing up our beautiful new Mountain House, people hunched over computers or steering wheels of Land Rovers, it’s all about caring for this wonderful part of the Atlantic Forest.

International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is a worldwide celebration of women that promotes greater awareness of female equality and rights. Here at Iracambi, it is apparent that gender bias is not a factor when it comes to saving forests and changing lives. Iracambi focuses on the strengths that individuals bring as people, not as a man or a woman, and encourages them to use and develop these strengths to mutually benefit both person and place.

Along the way, Iracambi has been sure to champion ...

Letter to the editor: Product as advertised

Thank you, Iracambi, for offering a real conservation volunteer experience. The product was as advertised, and there is no doubt in my mind that I will leave here a satisfied volunteer. I write to let other potential volunteers that yes, what you see is what you will get here at Iracambi!

On my six month trip around Central and South America, I have participated in two other volunteer programs. Without getting into specifics, let’s just say that I now know that ...

Tchau dry January!

After a very busy and action packed January, we can’t believe how quickly February has come around here at Iracambi (this we includes me, Els, the new volunteer coordinator here at Iracambi who arrived at the beginning of the year – hello!).

Much of the month was taken up hosting our second 100K Strong Program – the 20 strong group of American and Brazilian students made sure it was a lively few weeks here at Iracambi. It was great to see ...

Final Entry

“As we go on, we remember, … all the times we had together. And as our lives change, come whatever, we will still be friends forever.” 3 weeks, 21 days, 504 hours, 30,240 minutes: I still cannot believe that this program is coming to an end. I remember when taking a course in Brazil was just a thought. With the hard work and dedication of the faculty at Hampton University and the counter parts of 100k Strong, 8 Hampton University ...

The Environment and Me

We all arises again at the normal time at 7:30am enjoyed a nice spread of bread, cheese, scrambled eggs, fresh fruits, a nice selection of freshly squeezed fruit juice before class. Normally the first part of the day, after breakfast and before lunch, is time spend in the classroom with a lecture presented by the day’s instructor while the other half, after lunch, involves a more hands on activity. Today things were switched and right after breakfast we began our ...

For the afternoon Wagner surprised us with yogurt and cheese! That’s our obsession the yogurt and cheese. It was so ...

Greetings,
Today was a great day filled with bountiful information. The day commenced with all the students taking a trip to a new house that Leandro, a professor in the Iracambi rain forest, specializing in animal biology, is building for his family; the new home is environmentally friendly. Students took turns building bricks and sanding wood that will be used to form the new home. This was the first time, for most students, that they were able to participate in ...

Today we put our endurance, teamwork, and strength to the test as we went trekking for over 10 miles. We trekked from outside of Iracambi through the Serra Do Brigadeit Park. The sun was shining bright and we were all find with curiosity about what we would find. The trekking journey allowed us to witness the changes that have occurred in the terrain.
