Açai Day!

Today as we embarked on our journey with the Brazilian students, the word of the day was “Acai”. Our instructor, Kyvia Lugate gave us an in-depth introduction on the Acai palm tree and its influence on the Atlantic Rainforest. Kyvia who did her PhD thesis on the acai plant, specifically taught about the structure of the tree and how the leaves, trunk, and fruit each have a different role. After our introduction, we hiked inside the rainforest and climbed the ...

Welcome back to Iracambi!!!

Today we spent our last few hours in the city. Shalanda and Nikki went to the bakery this morning to get more bread. We then left the city to go pick up our new Brazilian students and bonded over the ride back to Iracambi. We soon realized that even though our languages were different that did not stop the formation of bonds and friendships. Tomorrow we start the beginning of week two and the start of practicing the methods of ...

Weekend in Juiz de Fora

Its the second day of our cultural filled weekend and the first day without Wagner in Juiz de Fora, because he had important work in Rio. We started our day at noon and eventually explored the city looking for food. We broke off into groups and my group (Shalanda, Brandi, Rebecca and myself) went to look for pizza. We went to the local restaurants that we saw on Friday but to our shock the restaurants only served late lunches and ...

Learning about Iracambi

Day 5 in Iracambi was very … informative. The information that Binka gave was useful for a lifetime and for the forthcoming week of exploring the Atlantic forest. Iracambi forest, where we are currently located, is filled with plants, reptiles, amphibians and insects never discovered before and we have the opportunity to explore this peculiar woodland. Hm, I wonder what is in store for us?  I am excited! Binka continued explaining the significance of the forest and all of its ...

Using our new found skills

Our trip to Central Plaza

AMAZING that’s only the word I can use to describe today’s experience. After our Portuguese class in the morning Wagner Belo informed us that we were going to take a trip to the city, but there’s catch we had to communicate in only Portuguese. Each of us had a task to buy different items; a snack, medicine, a lottery ticket, and a pencil. Seems simple huh? NO, we had ...

Português: pronomes e verbos

Pronomes e verbos

Today was a critical day in our Portuguese class. We covered pronouns and various verbs. This was a significant lesson because it aided us in creating complete and grammatically correct sentences. Wagner made learning the pronouns and verbs fun through a game of bingo and charades. We all participated with much enthusiasm as our semi-competitive sides came out. Unfortunately, there can only be one winner. However, we were all good sports and shared in Eles excitement as she ...

Welcome to Brazil!

January 5, 2015

100K pix jan 1Brazil! It is so nice to finally see you! After a long, tiring but safe traveling experience (thank you Delta Airlines), Brazil is everything we thought it would be! It is safe to say that living in the Atlantic rain forest is a cultural shock for most, but it will allow 8 Hampton University women to create an unbreakable bond. We were greeted at the airport ...
